Timed-entry tickets, available online, have helped spread out the crowds. The Spectacular is set up along the zoo’s Wetlands Trail, following a path that takes about 45 minutes to complete. Setting up and maintaining the exhibit takes “a small army of people,” he says, and he has “armies” deployed for similar displays at the Minnesota Zoo and in a Louisville, Kentucky, park.ĭeteriorating pumpkins have to be replaced, and by the end of the 32 nights of the local display alone, carvers will have gone through about 20,000 pumpkins, according to Diane Nahabedian, director of marketing and public relations for the Providence zoo. “I’m retired from the post office, so I have all year to brainstorm about this,” he added, with a laugh. The Spring and Summer sections feature “simple pleasures like fishing, swimming, kids eating watermelon and hot dogs, and we have these laser projectors that make what looks like lightning bugs,” Reckner said. “It’s not cold enough for snow it’s more like fog, but it adds to the appearance,” says Mike Finizza, a co-owner of Passion for Pumpkins. Angels, scenes from “The Nutcracker,” and faux stained-glass backdrops add to the magic, and there is even a snow machine to add atmosphere. Holidays feature prominently in the section devoted to Winter, along with seasonal sports and activities. Along with the Vivaldi concerto, a recording of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” is on the playlist.
